Damp and Mould in Holiday Homes: Causes and Lasting Fixes

31 October 2026 1 min read

Why do Bodrum homes left closed over winter get damp and mould? A step-by-step guide from ventilation to insulation.

The most common spring surprise for holiday home owners in Bodrum is the musty smell on opening the door and black marks in the corners. Humid sea air combined with a closed, unheated house is ideal for mould.

Find the cause first

  1. Condensation — indoor moisture turns to water on cold walls; typical in external corners, around windows and behind wardrobes.
  2. Rain penetration — water entering through the terrace, roof or façade; worse after rainy days.
  3. Pipe leaks — a leak inside a wall leaves a constantly wet patch, rain or not.

If you suspect a leak, check the meter with all taps off. If it moves, you need leak detection.

Against condensation

Leave wardrobe doors ajar and furniture a few centimetres from walls when closing up; use a dehumidifier or timed ventilation. The lasting fix is thermal insulation, which keeps walls from getting cold.

Against penetration

Have terrace and roof waterproofing checked and seal façade cracks with flexible filler and suitable paint. For damp basement walls, external waterproofing works best.

Cleaning alone won't fix it

Bleach hides mould for a few weeks; it comes back unless the cause is fixed. Solve the moisture, then use an anti-mould primer before repainting.
