Solar Water Heater Maintenance: Limescale, Anodes and Winter Prep

4 November 2026 1 min read

Hard water is the biggest enemy of solar water heaters in Bodrum. When and how to service the tank and collectors, and when to replace.

Most homes in Bodrum have a solar water heater on the roof. It provides free hot water most of the year, but neglected maintenance first cuts efficiency, then the tank corrodes through. The peninsula's hard water speeds this up.

Limescale: silent efficiency loss

Scale on the tank and heating element blocks heat transfer, so water heats less, the element runs longer and electricity bills rise. Descaling every two to three years is recommended in hard-water areas.

The magnesium anode

The anode rod attracts corrosion and dissolves over time; once gone, the tank itself corrodes. Check and replace it during descaling — far cheaper than a new tank.

Collector glass and fittings

Broken or misted glass lowers output, leaking fittings send water into the roof, and rusted frames can be dangerous in windy areas.

Winter prep

Frost is rare in Bodrum, but higher and inland areas such as Mumcular can drop below zero at night. Check antifreeze in closed-loop systems; for open systems in empty homes, consider draining.

Repair or replace?

If the tank has failed or the system is over 15 years old, replacement usually makes more sense. Size the tank for the number of users — larger tanks suit families and holiday lets.
